An FCE is a comprehensive battery of performance-based tests that are commonly used to determine ability for work, activities of daily living or leisure activities as defined by the APTA. The objective information obtained from the musculoskeletal and functional testing is used to determine the next step in the rehabilitation process or return to work.

  • Work Conditioning: Focuses on rebuilding physical function—strength, flexibility, and endurance.
  • Work Hardening: A more intensive program combining physical rehab, behavioral therapy, and job simulation.

Both prepare patients for a safe return to full or modified duty.

  • Your first visit depends on your service type:
    • Registration, Consent, and Questionnaire Completion
      • Forms for client information and consent are explained and then signed. Questionnaires regarding functional abilities are completed.
    • Medical History Review
      • The client and the therapist discuss the injury and the medical history. Information regarding present symptoms along with how the injury has affected activities of daily living, including the demands of the job are taken.
    • Examination
      • Following the medical history, the therapist performs a musculoskeletal exam. This testing is done to determine the client’s physical status.
    • Functional Testing
      • Activities similar to tasks that are performed at home or at a job or leisure are performed.
      • Examples include postural tolerances, repetitive movement abilities, and material handling abilities.

Expect hands-on assessments and personalized treatment focused on your recovery and job duties.
